Mission & Outreach

“How beautiful on the mountains, are the feet of one who brings good news, who heralds peace, brings happiness, proclaims salvation and tells Zion, ‘Your God is king!'”

Isaiah 52: 7

“Evangelism is not salesmanship; it is not urging people, pressing them, coercing them, overwhelming them or subduing them.
Evangelism is reporting Good News.”

Richard C. Halverson

Pope St Paul VI, in Evangelii Nuntiandi, said that evangelisation was the grace and vocation proper to the Church, her deepest identity. He continued by saying that she [the Church] existed in order to evangelise, i.e. in order to preach and teach, be a channel of the gift of grace, reconcile sinners with God, perpetuate Christ’s sacrifice in the Mass. (EN, 14)

Who is the Church? The Church is you and me. Therefore, by virtue of our baptism, Mission & Outreach is in our DNA!

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI is His 2013 Lenten message went as far as saying that the greatest work of charity is evangelisation because it involves “the highest and the most integral promotion of the human person”. He went on to say,
“There is no action more beneficial – and therefore more charitable – towards one’s neighbour than to break the bread of the Word of God, to share with him the Good News of the Gospel, to introduce him to a relationship with God.”

These thoughts are taken from Jesus’ mandate to the Church, ‘Go therefore, make disciples of all nations; baptise them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to all the commands I gave you. And know that I am with you always; yes, to the end of time”.(Mt 28: 16-20, cf. Mk 16:16-20).

The Catechism of the Catholic Church expresses it in the following terms:
Those who with God’s help have welcomed Christ’s call and freely responded to it are urged on by love of Christ to proclaim the Good News everywhere in the world. This treasure, received from the apostles, has been faithfully guarded by their successors. All Christ’s faithful are called to hand it on from generation to generation, by professing the faith, by living it in fraternal sharing, and by celebrating it in liturgy and prayer”. (CCC, 3)

where to find the bread of life”

Here, in WestEnd Mission, we bring our little contribution to this great mission work. We are not experts but we are willing servants and where God calls, He also equips.

Two particular ways we are involved in Mission and Outreach is through our Night Churchand Spirit in the City initiatives. To find out more about each event, visit their respective pages.
